Mastercard Foundation

Non-Profit Nairobi

Our work is guided by its mission to advance learning and promote financial inclusion for people living in poverty. One of the largest foundations in the world, it works almost exclusively in Africa. It was created in 2006 by Mastercard International and operates independently under the governance of its own Board of Directors.

Our Young Africa Works strategy sets out an ambitious goal for the next decade: by 2030, our work will enable 30 million young people in Africa, especially young women, to secure employment they see as dignified and fulfilling. Using youth employment as a key measure of socio-economic progress, we aim to help millions of people to find a pathway out of poverty.

As part of the strategy, we will deepen our engagement in some countries to better understand their economic aspirations and identify priority sectors for growth. Working with governments and the private sector, we will develop a long-term plan for each country of focus that will:

  • Improve the quality of education and vocational training so that they equip young people with the skills employers need;
  • Leverage technology to connect employers and job seekers, and drive growth; and
  • Enable entrepreneurs and small businesses to expand through access to financial services.

As we do this, we will continue to learn, share knowledge, catalyze innovation, and mobilize others across the continent.

At the Mastercard Foundation, we believe the challenge of youth unemployment in Africa cannot be solved by any one organization. By continuously working together with governments, the private sector, other funders, and young people, our goal is to challenge ourselves and others to innovate, explore, and test new ideas. Most importantly, we are driven to achieve sustainable, positive change. The time is right for the Foundation to focus on young people and the future of work in Africa.

As the Foundation builds its presence in Africa, it will also need to attract, retain and develop top talent, particularly from the continent. The Foundation has bold goals and it is imperative that it has the people and talent to achieve them.

The Foundation values innovative and fresh thinking as it strives to become a global thought leader. Its work is achieved by a strategic, nimble, and highly entrepreneurial team with a proactive and results-oriented approach to its philanthropic activities. The organization’s culture is shaped by people who are driven and passionate about the Foundation’s mission. We are looking for individuals who are interested in being part of a culture of excellence, collaboration, and respect.

The Mastercard Foundation values the unique skills and experiences each individual brings to their work and are committed to creating and maintaining an inclusive and accessible environment for everyone. We are an equal opportunity employer.

The Foundation provides: competitive salaries; benefits program; RRSP matching program; generous time-off benefits (including vacation, personal days, sick time and summer hours); and ongoing learning and professional development opportunities.
