Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Every year, IOM welcomes hundreds of interns to work in IOM offices worldwide. IOM is present in close to 600 field locations around the world, assisting governments in managing migration flows while ensuring safe and orderly migration. We require a wide variety of professionals to carry out our mandate.

At IOM we acknowledge that especially for nationals of some countries, it is harder to reach our Headquarters in Switzerland and to travel to our Country Offices to participate in an internship. The Diversity and Inclusion Internship Programme addresses this imbalance by covering the monthly stipend to support accommodation and living expenses, as well as travel and visa costs for selected interns. Interns are selected for a 6-month period through a highly competitive process, which usually includes an online test and an interview.

Since 2018, between 15 and 20 internship positions per year are offered through this internship programme to talented junior professionals from usually under-represented groups.

With the aim of increasing the diversity of the IOM workforce, the 2024 Diversity and Inclusion Internship Programme, will consist of 6 positions open exclusively to persons with disabilities and 9 roles open exclusively for nationals of non- and under-represented Member States.

Context: Background Information

The Office of Staff Security (OSS) is responsible for providing leadership on security policy management and Country Office operational support to enable the effective implementation and delivery of IOM programmes and activities, while managing risks at acceptable levels. As part of the wider IOM Diversity and Inclusion programme, OSS diversity and inclusion programme aims to diversify IOM’s security workforce by providing opportunities to talented young professionals who have nontraditional security backgrounds to work in various areas of the security risk management. At the end of the programme, individuals will have familiarity of the IOM and UN Security Management System and will have acquired new knowledge, skills, and behaviour on the specific security area they have worked in.


Under the overall supervision of the Director of OSS and direct supervision of the Security Policy and Training Coordination Officer (SPTCO); and in collaboration with the OSS Regional Security Officers and OSS Administrative and Finance personnel, the Intern – Office of Staff Security (Training and PCA) will be responsible and accountable for providing administrative support on the global training and learning activities of the Office of Staff Security (OSS).

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the SPTCO in designing materials for the IOM Security Decision-Makers’ Learning Programme.
  2. Assist in the planning and organization of the pilot for the IOM Security Decision-Makers’ Learning Programme.
  3. Assist in the planning and organization of the IOM-hosted Field Security Associate’s course.
  4. Design and develop learning materials and guidelines for disability considerations in training and learning.
  5. Support the SPTCO in the activities of the Inter-Agency Security Management Network’s (IASMN) Gender and Inclusion Sub-Working Group on Training.
  6. Gather data and draft a report on the IOM Global Security Training Statistics for the 1st half of 2024.
  7. Generate and review the list of locations where the Safe and Secure Awareness in the Field Environment (SSAFE) training, the Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) training, and the Women’s Security Awareness Training (WSAT) are identified as Security Risk Management Measures for the Organizational Effectiveness and Efficiency (OEE) reporting and as part of the 2025 IOM training needs assessment and analysis.
  8. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Training Components and Learning Elements

It is expected that the selected intern will:

  • Be exposed to the activities of IOM in the duty station.
  • Gain understanding about the IOM and the UN Security Management System (SMS) and its processes.
  • Learn technical skills described in this Post Description.
  • Be able to prove their dedication, skills, and capacity to work in an international setting as part of a diverse and international team.

Required Qualifications and Experience:


  • Master’s degree (or one year left of study) in Organizational Psychology, Adult Education, Instructional Design, Human Resources, Learning and Development, or a related field from an accredited academic institution; or
  • University degree in the above fields from an accredited academic institution with two years of work experience.


  • Experience in organizing training and learning activities is an asset.
  • Experience in preparing reports is an asset.
  • Experience in developing learning materials is an asset.


  • Understanding and knowledge in adult learning and training;
  • Computer literacy, especially database tools and strong Excel knowledge;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to timely understand the Organization’s structure and portfolios;
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds;
  • Proven ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to set deadlines; and,
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work independently.


IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

The selected candidate for this internship position will work on site (in the country of the duty station where this position is based). Interns will receive a monthly stipend, and the travel and visa costs will also be covered.

  2. are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
  3. are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
  4. are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.
  5. are at least 20 years old.

Depending on experience and location, IOM provides a small monthly stipend to help offset costs.

The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and background verification and security clearances. Subject to certain exemptions, vaccination against COVID-19 will in principle be required for individuals hired on or after 15 November 2021. This will be verified as part of the medical clearance process.
