Vacancy Description

Principle role:

Supporting all Child Protection Case Management activities for refugee children, their parents, caregivers, and families in need of protection at Kalobeyei Reception Centre.

Reporting line: The role reports to Child Protection Senior Officer.

Duration: 3 months.

Context:

Terre des hommes Foundation is an independent, neutral, and impartial Swiss organization founded in 1960, dedicated to bringing about significant and lasting change in the lives of children and young people, especially those most at risk.  Tdh ensures their well-being and the effective implementation of their rights as defined in the Convention on the Child’s Rights and other human rights instruments. To make a difference, Tdh focus our efforts on maternal and child health, children and young people in migration situations, and access to justice. Tdh promotes the active participation of children and young people to empower them. We advocate for their rights and support them in expressing their needs and interests. Tdh works in fragile contexts and conflict zones, as well as in more stable environments.

Tdh is present in Kenya since 2011. Currently Tdh is providing protection services for children and families affected by migration, natural crises and poverty in Dadaab refugee camps, in Garissa County, and in Korogocho informal settlement in Nairobi.

The intervention in Dadaab refugee camps is focused on prevention and response to child protection needs while strengthening protection community-based mechanisms in the refugee operation and its host communities.

In Korogocho informal settlements, Tdh implements early child development activities and child protection activities with a strong community-based approach aiming at decreasing violence against children and strengthening child protection mechanisms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Case identification and registration, Case planning, referral, and follow-up of the beneficiaries in collaboration with Child Protection Volunteers.
  • Develop an individual action plan for each beneficiary that responds to needs addressed in initial and comprehensive assessments and seek support of the Case Management Senior Officer whenever necessary.
  • Establish and maintain positive and efficient relations with target beneficiaries, community members and all the other actors operating at the Reception Centre. Seek for synergies to optimize resources and time and strengthen services for the beneficiaries whenever possible.
  • Regularly follow up the assigned case to ensure all services and action points listed in the case plan are carried out within agreed time frames. Ensure that progress is regularly reviewed.
  • Regularly monitor and provide support to children and families through shelter visits, providing guidance and advice.
  • Work closely with the Psychosocial team in the identification of psychosocial distress cases and makes appropriate references to Psychosocial team for help.
  • Work closely with data team to ensure timely data entry to the IACPIMS and feedback on follow up cases are generated as required.
  • Conduct Best Interest Assessments and Best interests Determination (BIAs/BIDs) for UASC and other children with heightened Protection concerns.
  • Timely preparation of progress reports including both qualitative and quantitative information on BIAs/BIDs activities and put into situation report, monthly report, and quarterly report.
  • Ensuring that issues for child protection are raised and addressed.
  • Ensure the placement of children in alternative care adhere to Tdh procedure and with the Kenya Guidelines on Alternative Care.
  • Responding to emergency cases.

Abuse Prevention Policy – Operational Risk Management

  • Commit to respect Tdh Risk Management Policies including: Child Safeguarding Policy, Safety and Security Policy and Anti-Fraud/Corruption Policy, Code of Conduct, Whistle Blowing Policy
  • Commit to ensure the best implementation possible of the Tdh Risk Management Policies
  • Commit to inform supervisors and to deal with any cases, allegations, or possibility of transgression, even potential, of the Tdh Risk Management Policies.

Child protection Policy

  • Commit to respect the Child Protection Policy.
  • Commit to ensure the best implementation possible of the Child Protection Policy in Kenya.
  • Commit to inform the Country Representative and to deal with any case of any allegations or possibility of transgression, even potential, of the Child Protection Policy.

Job Requirements:

  • Professional University degree in social work, psychology, social sciences, and any other relevant field.
  • Experience working with vulnerable children in need of Protection.
  • Previous experience with child protection organization within a refugee set is desirable.
  • Good IT knowledge (Microsoft Office, Internet).
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili.
  • Must be currently residing/ working in Kakuma/ Kalobeyei.
