Purpose of placement

The purpose of placing the place is to address the increasing need for young people’s involvement in campaigns against injustices, specifically in advocating for accountability in emergencies. The placement of the lnspirator will play a dynamic role that not only focuses on response and recovery, but also enhances preparedness. The lnspirator will support the technical capacity of the partner(s) in development, coordination, and delivery of their humanitarian work in line with AAI humanitarian signature and CHS standards while ensuring compliance with SHEA and protection in emergencies. This role will provide technical advisory aimed at strengthening the capacity of SPA2 partners that AAIK works with in ASAL and urban informal settlements. This role plays a very significant part supporting AAIK supporting partners to prepare for, mitigate the impact of, and respond to disasters and crises by providing
support, knowledge, mainstreaming protection and building long-term capacity. The lnspirator will also be key in assessing accountability in emergencies and working with young people to lead advocacy actions including championing policy reforms.

The role will help to ensure that partners are able to respond to sudden onset emergencies and chronic humanitarian situations, by implementing programmes that integrate recovery into on-going development efforts. The role will also be key in ensuring AAIK partners corporate commitments around climate, gender and localization are realised. The lnspirator will also ensure that we are key in realization of development-humanitarian-peace nexus.

Additionally, the inspirator will play a key role in the deploying youth leadership in emergencies toolkit that aligns with feminist, green, and just transition principles. This strategy aims to have a rooted and impactful influence on policies and initiatives, working closely with key stakeholders, including feminist groups, youth organizations, social movements, and allies.

INSPIRATOR TASKS

Activities

The Climate Justice lnspirator is expected to deliver tangible products and results that contribute to the empowerment of women and youth in addressing climate change and building resilience. These outputs will be achieved through various activities outlined below.

What will be done together with the hosting organisation?

20% of the lnspirator’s time – Mentor key staff in developing concepts and initiatives to ensure on matters of humanitarian, climate change and livelihoods

  • Mentor key staff at Kilifi Citizen Forum in developing concepts and initiatives related to emergencies and livelihoods.
  • Assist in the development of programs for various courses on humanitarian response, and resilience.
  • Conduct regular coaching sessions with trainers, coordinators,  and managers.
  • Assist in reviewing course content, training manuals, and scripts for capacity enhancement.

What will be done together with other partners, groups, organisations: 

60% of the lnspirator’s time – Strengthens women & youth leaderships and movements on climate change and resilience 

  • Work with young leaders from movements to enhance resilience and protect the rights of those affected emergencies.
  • Collaborate with young people leaders to develop strategies holding humanitarian actors and duty bearers accountable, engaging in system change, particularly around protection in emergencies.
  • Empower young people leadership in emergencies.

20% of the lnspirator’s time – Other tasks that are common for all lnspirators 

  • Provide mentorship for young people who have attended training at the Global Platform.
  • Mentor and support young people in their creative campaigning and organizing efforts at the Global Platform youth hubs.
  • Support specific learning and campaign activities coordinated by ActionAid.
  • Participate actively in knowledge-sharing networks like the Global lnspirator Learning network.
  • Engage in cross-country knowledge exchange initiatives.
  • Pursue personal training and development opportunities through induction courses and other relevant training programs.

INSPIRATOR PROFILE

Required skills and work/volunteer experiences

  • Proven experience working humanitarian work and feminist movements.
  • In-depth understanding of international development-humanitarian-peace nexus encompassing both historical and contemporary debates.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of effectively engaging diverse audiences and facilitating sharing and learning, including through online platforms.
  • Strong background in supporting community networks through capacity building and mobilization, particularly with youth groups for collective action.
  • Proficiency in utilizing digital and social media tools for delivering webinars.
  • Demonstrated experience in inspiring, mentoring, and supporting young people.
  • Familiarity with participatory approaches to youth organizing and activism, including creative nonviolent advocacy and campaign tools.
  • Experience in grassroots-level youth mobilization and organizing.

Personal qualifications

  • Demonstrates initiative and leadership qualities.
  • Identified as a youth activist and feminist.
  • Possesses strong problem-solving skills.
  • Exhibits patience and tolerance in challenging situations.
  • Displays sensitivity and adaptability across cultural, gender, religious, racial, national, and age differences.
  • Capable of managing complexities and delivering results effectively.
  • Able to work independently with minimal support and resources.
  • Holds a keen interest in advancing youth participation in climate justice campaigns.

LOCATION INFORMATION

Security situation & risk mitigation

The county is relatively peaceful, with limited insecurity incidents. However, integrating with local communities and following safety guidelines is advised. A detailed security briefing will be provided during induction.

Accommodation arrangements will be considered based on the candidate’s likely location in Kenya.
