Background:

UN Women Kenya’s Strategic Note (SN) 2023-2026 envisions a state where gender relations empower women and men to make informed decisions, have equal access to and use of quality services, and control resources and assets in a secure, accountable, and inclusive nation. The Strategic Note has prioritized the following four impact areas: 1) Women leadership in decision making, 2) Women’s Economic Empowerment, 3) Ending Violence against Women and Girls and 4) and Women, Peace and Security. The SN’s priorities are fully aligned to national priorities, the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) and the Global UN Women Strategic Plan (SP).
Reporting to the Communications Unit Team Leader, the Junior Communications Consultant supports the communications and advocacy strategies to increase the standing and awareness of UN Women with partners, the media, and the public. The Junior Communications Consultant promotes a client-oriented approach in UN Women.
Functions
To support these initiatives, the Consultant will provide essential technical assistance to the Communications Unit, ensuring high-quality, impactful outreach and documentation of UN Women’s work in Kenya.
Under the supervision of the Team Lead, Communications Unit, the Consultant will support the development and implementation of communication strategies and advocacy initiatives.
Key responsibilities include:
- Digital Communication and Online Presence
• Manage and maintain UN Women Kenya’s social media platforms, ensuring timely, accurate, and engaging content.
• Support the creation of multimedia content, including videos and social media stories.
• Monitor and report on digital performance metrics and audience engagement trends. - Event Coverage and Real-Time Support
• Provide on-the-ground support for events, including live social media coverage, media liaison, and real-time updates.
• Document events through high-quality photography and short video clips, ensuring swift dissemination.
• Assist with media briefings for key events and campaigns. - Photography and Videography
• Capture and edit high-quality images and video content aligned with UN Women branding standards.
• Coordinate video production, including scripting, scheduling, and collaborating with external production teams. - Graphic Design and Product Development
• Develop visually compelling designs for social media, reports, and advocacy materials as required.
• Create templates for standard publications and presentations to support uniformity in branding.
• Contribute to development of knowledge management products. - Content Management and Knowledge Sharing
• Establish, organize, and maintain a comprehensive online repository for knowledge management and communication materials, ensuring easy access, regular updates, and alignment with organizational goals.
• Develop and manage digital asset libraries for photos, videos, and publications, incorporating metadata and tagging systems to enhance searchability and usage tracking.
• Support in the creation, packaging, and dissemination of knowledge products and advocacy tools tailored for internal and external stakeholders, leveraging innovative formats and platforms to maximize impact.
• Support cross-departmental knowledge-sharing initiatives by supporting in organizing webinars and collaborative platforms to foster a culture of learning and information exchange. - Support Advocacy and Campaigns
• Contribute to the development of communications plans for projects and advocacy campaigns.
• Assist in drafting newsletters, articles, and success stories highlighting program achievements. - Capacity Building and Team Support
• Assist in providing training or guidance to team members on social media best practices, photography, and basic design tools.
• Collaborate with colleagues to ensure alignment with UN Women corporate communication guidelines. • Attend with team members relevant forums and support coordination within the UN Women events/activities.
• Assist in conducting research on new areas of engagement and in formulating ideas for concept notes to support resource mobilization for enhancing visibility and communications.
• Make travel arrangements as necessary including preparation of travel requisitions and claim.
• Prepare presentation material/slides in Power-point for presentations for the meetings/workshops and keep all papers ready for meetings.
• Identify best practices and lessons learned to guide programme improvement and strategy planning.

• Timely provision of substantive inputs as requested
• Timely delivery of developed communication and advocacy materials in high quality
• Website and social media accounts are up to date

Functional Competencies:
- Ability to establish, build and sustain effective relationships with clients

Education and certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, Public Relations or Journalism or a related field is required
Experience:
- At least 1 year of progressively responsible experience in providing support to the formulation and implementation of internal and external communications and advocacy strategies and related plans.
- Experience in the use of computer applications such as Microsoft Office as well as web-based management systems and Adobe design software packages.
- Experience in the use of social media and digital communications.
Language Requirements:
- Fluency in English and Kiswahili is required.
- Working knowledge of the other UN official working language is an asset.
