The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP)\r\n \r\n \r\n <\/g>\r\n <\/g><\/svg><\/span><\/a>\u00a0brings together philanthropy including the IKEA Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation and the Bezos Earth Fund, governments, technology, policy and development partners, and the private sector to tackle the twin challenges of energy access and transition in emerging and developing countries. By 2030, we aim to expand clean energy access to one billion people, enable 150 million new jobs and reduce 4 gigatons of future carbon emissions. We believe\u00a0<\/span>clean energy\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0development: without it, every other form of progress is undermined so we\u2019re building a movement to unlock a new era of inclusive green economic growth that accelerates universal energy access while enabling the global community to meet critical climate goals during the next decade.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Position\u00a0Overview:<\/h4>\n

The Intern will work with GEAPP\u2019s Africa team, conducting research, data analysis, technical writing, and other tasks to contribute to the creation of quality outputs such as reports, memos, and presentations that support the advancement of our Africa portfolio of activities aimed at working with African governments on policy and implementation, deploying catalytic finance and market development activities to deliver energy access and energy transition projects.\u00a0 Please note that this internship does not guarantee future employment.<\/p>\n

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:<\/h3>\n
    \n
  • Conduct research tasks and collect data on energy access and transition-related topics.<\/li>\n
  • Work with the project lead on data analysis.<\/li>\n
  • Draft quality project deliverables, including memos and briefers based on research and market assessment reports.<\/li>\n
  • Support program administration and coordination, such as organizing webinars or workshops.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Education, Experience, and Skills:<\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Education:<\/strong> Candidates must be enrolled in a relevant Master\u2019s or PhD degree\u00a0programme\u00a0or have recently graduated with a Master\u2019s degree or PhD\u00a0on topics\u00a0related to\u00a0the development, implementation and\/or assessment of clean energy access policies and\u00a0energy\u00a0sector reform programs\u00a0in a developing country context.<\/li>\n
    • Language:<\/strong> Candidates must be fluent in written and spoken English.\u00a0Additional knowledge of French\u00a0or\u00a0Portuguese\u00a0would be\u00a0desirable.<\/li>\n
    • Work experience<\/strong>:\u00a0This internship is intended for early career post-graduates with little to no experience (typically under 3 years). A\u00a0background\u00a0or demonstrated interest in\u00a0electricity\u00a0policy, finance and energy economics will be helpful. Also,\u00a0experiences\u00a0related to energy policy assessment in a developing country context\u00a0may be an advantage in the selection process.<\/li>\n
    • Skills:<\/strong>\u00a0Candidates should be capable of working in a multicultural and international team environment and have good communication and IT skills. Candidates must be able to demonstrate\u00a0competency\u00a0in\u00a03\u00a0or more of the following\u00a0mandatory areas:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Mandatory skills:<\/h4>\n
        \n
      • Research and Analytical Skills<\/strong>:\u00a0Demonstrate ability to conduct research on energy access trends, policies, and technologies, and analyze data to draw actionable insights.<\/li>\n
      • Data Analysis and Visualization:<\/strong> Proficiency in Excel or other data analysis tools, with skills in visualizing data to communicate insights effectively.<\/li>\n
      • Communication and Writing Skills<\/strong>: Strong written and verbal communication skills to prepare reports, presentations,\u00a0memos\u00a0and updates.\u00a0Medium to advanced level skills with writing narrative reports and slide decks.<\/li>\n
      • Basic Financial Analysis<\/strong>: Understanding financial concepts to assist in analyzing project costs, budgeting, and assessing the financial sustainability of energy projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Competency in the following areas is desirable:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

          \n
        • Project Management<\/strong>: Familiarity with project management principles, including planning, scheduling, and monitoring, to assist in organizing and tracking program activities.<\/li>\n
        • GIS and Mapping Skills<\/strong>:\u00a0Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for mapping energy access gaps and planning infrastructure development.<\/li>\n
        • Digital Skills and Tech Savviness<\/strong>:\u00a0Competence with digital tools, software, and possibly coding or database management to support data handling and project monitoring systems\u00a0will be a plus<\/li>\n
        • Interest in Policy and Regulatory Frameworks<\/strong>: Knowledge of, or\u00a0demonstration of\u00a0willingness to learn about, policy, finance,\u00a0and regulatory factors affecting energy access in emerging markets.<\/li>\n
        • Technical Knowledge of the Power Sector<\/strong>:\u00a0Understanding\u00a0(or interest) of\u00a0the key technologies involved in the power sector value chain, from\u00a0generation (specifically\u00a0renewable energy technologies)\u00a0to\u00a0power transmission\u00a0and\u00a0distribution.\u00a0Some\u00a0understanding of power sector planning, implementation, and operations will be a plus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Location:<\/strong>\u00a0Successful candidates will be expected to work from one of the\u00a0GEAPP Africa offices (Nairobi or Johannesburg).<\/p>\n

          Availability:<\/strong> Candidates must be available for a minimum three-month full-time internship, with an option of a one-time renewal for up to a maximum of six months. Start dates are flexible, ranging from November 2024 to January 2025.<\/p>\n
