Our efforts are firmly rooted in people, leveraging scientific and technical expertise as we collaborate with governments and organizations to conserve and enhance Africa\u2019s shared resources in the 9 countries we operate.<\/p>\n<p>TNC Africa Oceans Strategy focuses on securing large-scale ocean protection by supporting effective marine spatial planning, sustainable fisheries, and community-led conservation approaches. Our work seeks to establish sustainable financing to enable conservation outcomes at large marine ecosystem scale, by supporting policy and regulatory frameworks, as well as local capacity, with emphasis on linking science and communities to habitat protection, restoration and management. TNC\u2019s work on fisheries aims to safeguard productive marine fisheries for ecosystem health and as important foundation for food and livelihood security. Our vision is for aquaculture to grow with the least environmental impact. TNC has established partnerships with several non-government and government agencies to support fisheries and coastal community-led conservation throughout Africa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our aim is to conserve and restore lost or degraded coastal wetlands (seagrass meadows, mangroves, and salt marshes) and promote best practices to scale beyond the capacity of TNC. The current geographic focus of TNC Africa Oceans Strategy is Seychelles, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Gabon, Namibia, Angola, and Mauritius. The focus of this program is coastal Kenya with most\u00a0functions in the South Coast and Lamu-Tana seascape.<\/p>\n<h3>WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU<\/h3>\n<p>The broad goal of this Internship program is to provide practical learning opportunity for interns in working within technical teams, coordination of technical work and implementing TNC\u2019s marine and coastal conservation program in Kenya. The internship is for specified period of one year from the date of engagement. The intern will report to the Marine Program Officer- Western Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Under close supervision by the technical team, the scope of this internship is;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Work closely with the Kenya marine team and provide support to the technical team on sustainable\u00a0fisheries, mangrove restoration and restorative aquaculture.<\/li>\n<li>Support TNC staff and partners to plan and coordinate fieldwork, workshops, meetings, trainings and learning exchanges.<\/li>\n<li>Under the guidance of the technical lead, support the implementation of community-led enterprises that incentivize sustainable practices in Lamu and Tana River counties.<\/li>\n<li>Support gender-related work with coastal fishing communities in Kenya by consolidating data for evaluating gender programs.<\/li>\n<li>Support partnership and capacity building activities of ongoing seaweed work along the coast of Kenya.<\/li>\n<li>Support planning of fieldwork, consultation meetings and site visits to mangroves community Forest Associations in Lamu and Tana River Counties.<\/li>\n<li>Learn how to prepare summarized report on achievements every month with the technical team.<\/li>\n<li>May involve working in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>WHAT YOU'LL BRING<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Bachelor\u2019s degree in a field relevant to Natural Resource Management, Marine science\u00a0or other relevant fields.<\/li>\n<li>Must have graduated, not presently in school\/college, no experience required.<\/li>\n<li>Fluent in English and Kiswahili, written and spoken.<\/li>\n<li>Willing to travel and work in remote settings.<\/li>\n<li>Willingness to learn, interact, and work with multiple actors and stakeholders.<\/li>\n<li>Adhere to TNCs Code of conduct and conflict of interest policy.<\/li>\n<li>Willingness to learn new skills.<\/li>\n<li>Willingness to stay and work in rural\u00a0settings for a prolonged period when needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Desired Qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Residence in Mombasa where the internship will be based.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to swim, dive and work underwater.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to use Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of data management and statistical skills,<\/li>\n<li>training on data management, basic GIS training and or applicable skills in\u00a0mapping is desirable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>WHAT WE BRING<\/h3>\n<p>Since 1951, TNC has been doing work you can believe in.
