Terms of Reference – Creative Digital Content and Insights Intern
Duration: September – December 2025 (Full time -3 months)
Location: Kenya (remote or Nairobi-based)

Context

The Population Council’s GIRL Center generates data-driven insights that inform global policies, programs, and advocacy efforts aimed at advancing the wellbeing of adolescent girls. In line with our communications, convening, and engagement goals, we are seeking to explore a new process of packaging these insights into compelling, accessible multimedia formats.

The multimedia formats (print and digital) will be utilized on our digital platforms, website, social media, and events.

To support this, we are recruiting a creative digital content and insights intern who will collaborate with the GIRL Center team to creatively synthesize our research outputs into digital content, including infographics, short animations, looping GIFs, and AI-generated visuals, for use across social media, presentations, events, and other strategic platforms.

This internship offers an exciting opportunity to apply digital storytelling, visual communication, and AI tools in a mission-driven, global development setting.

Objective of the Role

Support the translation of GIRL Center research into creative, audience-ready digital products that make technical information accessible and visually engaging. The intern will help generate
content that enhances outreach to stakeholders, while aligning with the Council’s brand and strategic priorities.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Communications and GIRL Center teams, the intern will:

  • Collaborate with the GIRL Center team to review content from selected GIRL Center reports and data dashboards to identify compelling insights.
  • Develop visually engaging materials such as static infographics, short looping GIFs, short videos, brief animations (5–30 seconds), AI-generated visuals, or data storytelling formats.
  • Use tools such as Canva, InDesign, Illustrator, and other platforms that the Council utilizes to create content.
  • Explore the use of AI-powered platforms which the Council has access to, for generating content and making recommendations for future use.
  • Work with the Communications team to ensure brand and style alignment across all visuals.
  • Adapt outputs for multiple platforms (social media, print, presentations, website).

Learning and Mentorship Opportunities

This assignment offers hands-on experience in knowledge translation and multimedia design within a dynamic global research environment. This role offers the opportunity to explore and apply various tools for storytelling, data visualization, and transforming complex evidence into accessible and compelling content. You will collaborate closely with experts across policy, research, and communications teams, providing a rich learning environment and professional mentorship.

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in communications, design, digital media, or a related field, with demonstrated experience in adolescent-focused content in the development sector.
  • Strong creative design skills and experience using design software, including Canva, InDesign, Illustrator.
  • Ability to translate complex technical content into clear, engaging visuals.
  • Familiarity with storytelling for development or advocacy is a plus.
  • Passion for gender equality and adolescent wellbeing.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

Duration and Work Plan
• Internship duration: 3 months (September – December 2025)
• Specific timelines and output schedule to be developed upon onboarding

The intern will report to the GIRL Center’s Associate Director, and in their absence, the GIRL Center Manager, and will work in collaboration with the Communications team and research/data focal persons across thematic areas.
