Project description:

The Kenya Medical Research Institute in collaboration with the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine conduct research activities related to malaria, HIV, tuberculosis and other diseases. Due to its continued growth in research, the program has the following vacancy in Malaria Labs;

Position: Laboratory Technologist, Job Group, KMR8 – (1) position
Location: KEMRI/CGHR Malaria Laboratories, Kisumu, Siaya and Homa Bay
Reporting to: Laboratory Supervisor

Job Summary:

The candidate will be responsible for conducting laboratory analyses of biological samples, which include but not limited to Malaria microscopy, Haematology, Biochemistry, Immunology, molecular biology to support clinical trials and laboratory research within the KEMRI/CGHR Malaria Division.

Qualifications required

i) Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences from a recognized institution
ii) A minimum of 2 years of experience working in a busy biomedical laboratory
iii) Registered by Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB)

Responsibilities and tasks

i. Preparation of laboratory reagents
ii. Processing of biological samples, laboratory supply inventory management, storage and shipment of biological samples
iii. Perform microscopic parasitological diagnosis of malaria
iv. Perform full blood count using automated analyser
v. Perform full biochemistry analysis using automated analyser and point of care devices
vi. Perform other laboratory assays as per protocol and relevant Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
vii. Maintaining of quality control procedures in all assays performed
viii. Development of laboratory SOPs

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This is a one (1) year contract, renewable subject to availability of funds, with a probation period for the first 3 months. Salary is negotiable within the KEMRI scheme of service depending on education, experience and demonstrated competency.
