JOB PURPOSE

The Laboratory Analyst is responsible for conducting laboratory analysis and quality verification of raw materials from our quarries and suppliers, including Limestone, Dolomite, Kaolin, Gypsum, and Bentonite, as well as finished goods, to ensure compliance with approved quality standards, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications for the processing and supply of industrial minerals and fillers, terrazzo materials, animal feed inputs, and agricultural lime products.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure quality control activities comply with the Mining Act, 2016 and relevant regulations issued by the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy & Maritime Affairs.
  • Ensure adherence to Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA), 1999 and NEΜΑ requirements relating to dust control, waste management, and material handling.
  • Support compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), 2007 and Work Injury Benefits Act (WIBA), 2007 during quality inspections and sampling activities.
  • Assist management during inspections and audits by State Department for Mining, NEMA, and other regulatory authorities.

2. Raw Material Quality Control

  • Inspect quarry-run dolomite and limestone to confirm conformity with approved geological and production specifications.
  • Monitor blasting outcomes and rock fragmentation quality to ensure suitability for downstream crushing and milling.
  • Identify contamination, weathered rock, or unsuitable material and recommend corrective actions.

3. In-Process Quality Control

  • Conduct routine sampling during crushing, screening, milling, and grading operations.
  • Monitor particle size distribution, moisture content, and product consistency in line with customer specifications.
  • Verify correct crusher settings, screen sizes, and mill parameters to maintain consistent quality.
  • Coordinate with production teams to rectify quality deviations promptly.

4. Finished Product Quality Assurance

  • Inspect and test finished products to ensure compliance with contractual specifications and internal quality standards.
  • Authorize product release or recommend rejection of non-conforming materials.
  • Ensure proper segregation, labelling, and storage of finished products to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Test and verify finished goods prior to release or dispatch.
  • Confirm compliance with internal standards, KEBS requirements, and customer specifications.
  • Recommend acceptance, reprocessing, or rejection of finished products based on laboratory results.

5. Acceptance, Rejection & Non-Conformance Control

  • Recommend acceptance, conditional acceptance, or rejection of raw materials and finished goods.
  • Ensure rejected materials are clearly identified, segregated, and documented.
  • Raise non-conformance reports and support corrective and preventive actions.

6. Laboratory Testing, Equipment and Housekeeping.

  • Carry out laboratory tests including sieve analysis, moisture determination, and basic chemical analysis where applicable.
  • Maintain calibration and serviceability of QC laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure laboratory activities meet safety and environmental standards prescribed under Kenyan law.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of laboratory chemicals and samples.
  • Maintain high standards of laboratory cleanliness and organization.
  • Sampling & Laboratory Analysis
  • Conduct representative sampling of raw materials and finished products in line with approved SOPs.
  • Perform laboratory testing including:
    • Particle size distribution (sieve analysis)
    • Moisture content determination
    • Bulk density and physical property tests
    • Basic chemical analysis where applicable
  • Ensure test results meet specifications for:
    • Industrial minerals and fillers
    • Terrazzo products
    • Animal feed-grade materials
    • Agricultural Lime Products

6. Documentation, Reporting & Traceability

  • Maintain accurate QC records, test results, inspection logs, and non-conformance reports as required by law and company procedures.
  • Prepare quality reports for management review and regulatory reference.
  • Support traceability of products from quarry face to final dispatch.

7. Collaboration, Continuous Improvement & Training

  • Work closely with QC, production, and procurement teams to ensure consistent product quality.
  • Provide laboratory data to support process optimization and supplier performance evaluation.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and quality reviews.
  • Identify quality-related process inefficiencies and propose corrective and preventive actions.
  • Train plant and quarry personnel on quality requirements, SOPs, and compliance expectations.
  • Participate in internal audits and corrective action reviews.

8. Health, Safety & Environmental Responsibilities

  • Enforce compliance with OSHA 2007 during sampling, testing, and plant inspections.
  • Promote safe handling of materials, chemicals, and laboratory equipment.
  • Support dust suppression, noise control, and waste minimization initiatives in line with NEMA guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Diploma or Degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, or Quality Management.
  • Minimum 2-3 years' experience in quality control within mining, quarrying, cement, or mineral processing operations in Kenya.
  • Practical knowledge of testing Limestone, Dolomite, Kaolin, Gypsum, and Bentonite.
  • Familiarity with industrial minerals, terrazzo materials, animal feed inputs, and agricultural lime quality requirements.
  • Good understanding of Kenyan mining, environmental, and occupational safety regulations.
  • Practical knowledge of aggregates, limestone, dolomite, and grits processing.
  • Strong analytical, reporting, and documentation skills.
  • Computer literacy (MS Excel, Word).
