The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a state corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which has since been amended to Science, Technology and Innovation Act 2013 as the national body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.
Laboratory Technologist - Kisumu
Key responsibilities
- Accurate and timely performing of study specific assays
- Perform laboratory tests, including HIV testing, diagnostic assays, and study-specific assays as per protocol.
- Collect nasal swab specimens from participants.
- Prepare, process, and store participant specimens, ensuring accuracy, custody, and archival as required.
- Run and log specimen controls in line with SOP requirements.
- Ensure proper laboratory waste segregation and management.
- Maintain and update laboratory inventory, including consumables and reagents.
- Develop, review, and implement laboratory SOPs, specimen flow charts, and related documents in compliance with the study protocol.
- Ensure compliance with all SOPs, GCLP standards, and laboratory safety and infection control protocols, Receive, download, transcribe, and report external laboratory results according to the lab results communication SOP.
- Participate in and pass all required proficiency testing and external quality assessments (EQAs).
- Support supervised sample shipment procedures and ensure IATA certification compliance.
- Update and maintain the laboratory specimen database, ensuring quality assurance of data, by providing accurate, timely laboratory results and ensuring data integrity.
- Participate in quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) activities to uphold laboratory standards and Serve as the QA/QC point person at the laboratory level
Vacancy Requirements:
- Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences from a recognized training institution
- Registered by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) with current practicing license
- Proficiency in infant phlebotomy
- Experience in clinical trials
- Trained on Good clinical laboratory practice –GCL
