The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development.

The Center, through its Research and Related Capacity Strengthening (RRCS) Division, seeks to strengthen individual and institutional research capacity to enable African researchers to fully participate in defining and implementing priority population and health programs on   the continent. As part of individual capacity strengthening efforts, APHRC has, over the years, been running a demand-driven research internship program whose objective seeks to nurture talented young Africans to become future scholars and research leaders.

For the 2026 period, the Research and Related Capacity Strengthening (RRCS) Division has opened internship opportunities in the following projects for 3-6 months, starting May 2026.

Project 17 – Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (AI/ML) and Full-stack software developers – (1 intern)

Project Description

The Africa Think Tank Platform (ATTP) Project will work in various areas to support the African Union Commission (AUC) in generating data and evidence that will help the AUC and member countries make better decisions.

Internship Activities

  • Contribute to the development of an integrated suite of open-access, web-based policy intelligence platforms under the Consortium for Africa Cross-Border Evidence and Policy Sovereignty (CACEPS) consortium project, led by APHRC. Specific activities include:
    1. Full-stack development of four flagship digital tools: the African Continental Free Trade Area Policy Simulation Tool (AfCFTA) Policy Simulation Tool, Food System Resilience Index Dashboard, Human Capital Readiness Dashboard, and Trade Facilitation & Integrity Index built for real-time, multi- country data visualization.
    2. AI/ML integration to support predictive modelling, scenario simulation, and automated data pipelines ingesting continental datasets from sources including Afreximbank, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. (UNECA), and national statistical agencies.
    3. Front-end development of interactive, multilingual user interfaces designed for policymakers and Regional Economic Communities (RECs), incorporating data storytelling, geospatial mapping, and responsive design.
    4. Back-end development and Application Programming Interface (API) architecture connecting tools to the African Research Connect (ARC) and consortium partner data systems across five countries.
    5. Platform testing and iteration in collaboration with thematic researchers, including user testing with African Union stakeholders and regional economic communities.

Interns will gain hands-on experience building production-grade policy technology tools with real continental reach.
