UNEP office in Nairobi is looking for an Environmental Data Research and Methodology Intern to support data analysis and digital tools, assisting with research methodology, data sourcing, and evidence assessment. Help compile, organize, and document data processes for reports and presentations.

The specific functions of the Data Analytics, Statistics and Intelligence Section include, but are not limited to supporting environmental decision-making by providing data, analysis, and forward-looking insights.

The Office of Science (OoS) supports environmental decision-making by providing data, analysis, and forward-looking insights.
Environmental data research and methodology Intern
The Intern will report to the Programme Management Officer, in the Data Analytics, Statistics and Intelligence (DASI) Section.
The intern will support ongoing work related to data analytics and digital tools, including contributions to a foresight platform and related analytical workflows.
Duties and responsibilities:
Tasks will include:
- Assisting with the development of guidelines and methodology for research of emerging (environmental) issues
- Conducting research on data sources, environmental and emerging issues
- Assisting in organizing and adding to the database
- Supporting the compilation, assessment and ranking of evidence
- Supporting documentation of data processes, workflows, and methodologies
- Assisting in preparation of technical inputs to reports, presentations, and briefs
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
As well as:
- Be computer literate in standard software applications.
- Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Field of study: Environmental science, Data Science, Statistics, Environmental Engineering, Sustainable Development or another related field is required.
1 Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
2 Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, master’s or PH.D. Programme.
3 Ability to do scientific literature research and critically assess information sources
4 Understanding of basic environmental science concepts
5 Ability to synthesize ideas and write concise reports

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
