Communication Interns – 2 Positions

Who we are
Fairtrade Africa (FTA) is the umbrella network organization representing Fairtrade certified producers and workers in Africa. It has four (4) regional networks – Eastern Africa; Southern Africa; West Africa; and Middle East and North Africa. Established in 2005, FTA aims to effectively represent producers and workers within the International Fairtrade System and provide services to them that contribute to the improvement of their livelihoods. The FTA Board directs policy and strategic development of the organization.
FAIRTRADE AFRICA PURPOSE: To improve the socio-economic conditions of African producers through increased access to better trading conditions.
The communications desk
The communications desk under the Operations Department leads and coordinates all regional communication activities. The desk spearheads FTA-ECAN’s communication strategy, acts as the custodian of the Fairtrade brand at the regional level, serves as the liaison point for communications with peers from National Fairtrade Organizations (NFOs) spread across the world, directs the production of communication products including high quality images, videos and print material to meet professional standards and brand requirements and among other activities, leads the implementation various visibility activities (online and offline) to raise the profile of the region.
What you will do
FTA-ECAN has a robust communication plan and requires the support of a skilled intern to realize its’ ambitions. Under the overall supervision of the Regional Communications Officer, the intern will provide support in the following areas:
- Collect, compile, and document impact stories and best practices from Fairtrade Certified Flower Producers on FTA interventions and programs.
- Support the flower producer organizations in Kenya, Ethiopia & Uganda to update their online Digital Product Catalogues.
- Build a repository /database of Fairtrade Premium use impact stories.
- Support in updating flower producer profiles. Updates will involve editing and proof-reading profiles for clarity, coherence and accuracy as well as minimal layout to meet the branding requirements of Fairtrade producer profiles.
- Support in drafting stories illustrating the use of Fairtrade Premium among certified producers.
- Provide support in the planning and implementation of activities geared towards raising the profile of Fairtrade in the region.
- Collaborate with Communications in drafting and developing the flowers newsletter.
- Assist in designing digital materials in line with Fairtrade’s branding guidelines.
- Other tasks as may be required.
The intern is also expected to strengthen his/her knowledge and understanding of the Fairtrade System and howit works. Resource materials will be availed to facilitate this.
Minimum qualifications and experience
a) University Degree in Media, Communications, Public Relations or Journalism (Degree certificate must be provided as proof).
b) Minimum of 1 year post qualification relevant experience.
Skills and competencies
a) Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
b) Proficiency in using a computer and various office software packages including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Presentation. Knowledge of working with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign/Illustrator) is an added advantage
c) Ability to write strong/captivating case stories
d) Strong editing skills
e) Attention to detail and accuracy
f) Must be a good team player with a high degree of initiative, flexibility and tolerance
g) Highly adaptive and ability to work under minimum supervision
