Project Background

The Preparation Project for the Kigali Implementation Plan (KIP Prep) is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation (BMZ) and implemented in cooperation with the National Ozone Unit (NOU) under the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry (MECC&F) in Kenya.

The Kenyan government acceded to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer in November 1988 and ratified the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer the same month. In 2023 Kenya ratified the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol and is currently in the process to develop a strategy for Kenya’s Kigali Implementation Plan which has the aim to phase-down HFCs by 2045 in a stepwise approach.

Responsibilities

The key responsibility of the Intern is to support the Project Advisors to ensure delivery of key project indicators in the activity areas mentioned above. The interns will carry out the following specific tasks:

Technical Support and Advisory 

  • Provide support in organizing and coordinating trainings and workshops with trainers and through consultants (identification of consultants, guiding consultants, preparing & reviewing of progressive and final consultants’ reports)
  • Support research on sustainable cooling, certification scheme, technological approaches and their applications in selected cooling categories.
  • Support coordination and alignment with government/regulatory institutions, private sector, development partners, NGOs, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and other stakeholders.
  • Support project monitoring, evaluation and knowledge management.
  • Support the above-mentioned projects in administrative work and execution of project mandates.

Communication and networking

  • Collect, collate, process, and distribute relevant information, monitor communication and interaction between various stakeholders through analyses of the media, direct dialogue, participation in meetings, trainings, workshops and seminars
  • Document key lessons learnt from various project activities.

Event & workshop management

  • Plan event from start to finish according to requirements, target audience and objectives.
  • Coming up with suggestions to enhance the workshop’s success.
  • Supporting the preparation of budgets and ensuring adherence.

Other tasks 

The interns undertake any other additional duties at the request of the project team to support the management of the project, including administrative tasks and support towards projects within the Energy sub-cluster.

Required Profile

Qualifications and skills: 

  • At least university bachelor’s degree in environmental science, renewable energy, climate change (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated Experience/Interest in ozone layer projection and climate change.
  • Previous experience in working with diverse stakeholder groups would be an added advantage.

Other knowledge, additional competences:

  • Competency in Microsoft (MS) Office Suite (Office 365, MS Teams, MS SharePoint, MS BI etc.)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong research skills
  • Good initiative, creativity and design skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent command of English
  • Experience in coordinating international events will be considered a strong asset.

Timing and Duration of Assignment

The duration of this contract is 6 months.

Duty location

The intern will be based in GIZ Offices in Nairobi
