Reports to: Program Coordinator
Location: Kisumu, Kenya
Position Type: Full-time, 8-month internship (with possibility of extension)
Stipend: A modest Monthly stipend will be provided
About Homeless of Kisumu (HOK)
Homeless of Kisumu is a youth-led, community-based organization championing the well-being and dignity of vulnerable communities in Western Kenya. Through our Sustainable Livelihoods program, we promote economic empowerment, skill development, and inclusive growth, especially for women, youth, and waste actors.
Job Purpose
The Communications Intern will support the organization’s internal and external communications efforts, with a focus on storytelling, digital engagement, documentation, and visibility. The intern will work closely with the Program Coordinator to grow HOK’s online presence, strengthen brand identity, and amplify the impact of our work.
Key Responsibilities
- Content Creation and Storytelling
- Assist in drafting compelling stories, blog posts, and beneficiary profiles for the website and reports.
- Support the creation of social media content (graphics, captions, videos, photos).
- Attend field activities to capture impact stories and testimonials from beneficiaries.
- Social Media and Digital Engagement
- Help manage and grow HOK’s presence on platforms like Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
- Schedule and publish regular posts to ensure consistent engagement.
- Monitor and report on social media metrics and trends.
- Design and Branding
- Support development of visually appealing communication materials such as brochures, posters, banners, and newsletters.
- Assist in ensuring brand consistency across all communications.
- Media and Public Relations
- Compile press kits, media lists, and assist in coordinating media coverage.
- Support the drafting of press releases, opinion pieces, and event briefs.
- Monitor media mentions and keep a media archive.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Assist in documentation of events, meetings, and project milestones through photography, video, and written summaries.
- Organize and archive photos, videos, and other media assets.
- Contribute to internal reports, donor updates, and knowledge products.
Qualifications and Experience
- Recent graduate with a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Studies, or a related field.
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Familiarity with social media management and content creation tools (e.g. Canva, CapCut, Meta Business Suite).
- Basic graphic design and/or photography/videography skills are an advantage.
- Creative, proactive, and passionate about social impact and community development.
