The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) is the learned society of the engineering profession and co-operates with national and other international institutions in developing and applying engineering to the benefit of humanity.

Title: COMMUNICATION AND MARKETING INTERN
Department: Policy, Research and Partnerships
REF.: IEK/CEO/HR/009/2025

Job Purpose

The Communication and Marketing intern will work closely with the Policy, Research and Partnerships team to market and communicate IEK events and activities in a timely and effective manner. The role will also support the membership team and work on partnership projects on resource mobilization and advocacy activities.

Key Responsibilities:

The marketing and communication intern will assist in:
a)    Managing the IEK website and social media platforms; run communication campaigns supporting various IEK projects.
b)    Serving as media liaison – including organizing press conferences, media events, and interviews.
c)    Maintaining consistency of the IEK brand across all platforms.
d)    Handling both internal and external communications.
e)    Writing and editing newsletters, media briefs, blogs, news releases, opinion editorials, etc.
f)    Drafting correspondence, speeches, statements, talking points, and presentations.
g)   Collaborating with the editorial committee on the Engineering in Kenya Magazine.
h)   Contributing to the development and production of IEK publications.
i)    Responding to member inquiries and provide customer support through digital and other channels.
j)    Designing and updating IEK marketing collateral (brochures, fliers, e-shots, etc)
k)   Coordinating the creation of IEK videos and photo content.
l)    Managing media-related resources (e.g., banners, branding materials).
m)  Developing a concept for an IEK Engineering TV show and actively pursue sponsorship.
n)   Assisting in the planning, promotion, and execution of IEK events.
o)   Contributing to the development of branded IEK merchandise.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidate must have graduated within the last three (3) years from a recognized University with a Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Media Studies, Marketing, or a related field.

Required Skills

  1. Strong writing and editing skills
  2. Creativity and attention to detail
  3. Good understanding of social media and digital marketing
  4. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  5. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  6. Basic graphic design or video editing skills is an added advantage
  7. Proactive, organized, and results-oriented
