The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The overall objective of the Industry and Economy Division of UNEP is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies, practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.

The Sustainable Mobility Unit (SMU) is part of the Industry and Economy Division, and the unit promotes sustainable, low and no emissions transport. UNEP’s SMU wishes to engage the services of an intern for a period of 6 months to support a secretariat for a global coalition of transport-related private sector companies that is being established to accelerate the decarbonisation of their industry.

Under the supervision of the Programme Manager for the freight portfolio, the intern will conduct the following tasks:

  1. Assist in analyzing vehicle electrification policies, strategies, targets, and data related to the members of the coalition and their wider industry.
  2. Assist in drafting analyses of the impact and potential for vehicle electrification of the members of the coalition, for publishing on behalf of the Secretariat.
  3. Assist in populating a knowledge-sharing platform on vehicle electrification among the Coalition members.
  4. Assist in mapping out opportunities for the Coalition members to take a leadership position in the electrification of the wider transport sector in the countries that they operate.
  5. Assist in organizing the quarterly online meetings of the Coalition (e.g., communications, notetaking, etc.).
  6. Support the organisation of the annual in-person meeting of the Coalition (e.g., venue booking, travel planning, workshop planning, etc.)
  7. Support in drafting outreach and communication materials relating to the activities of the Coalition.
  8. Support the organisation of events to communicate the activities and progress of the Coalition.
  9. Support the collection and visualization of vehicle electrification data from the Coalition members.
  10. Carry out other duties relevant to the Intern’s educational background.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in Engineering, Transport or Urban Planning, Environmental management, International relations, Climate change, Science, Physics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or Knowledge Management.

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

pplicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.

NOTE: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas

Additional Information

Candidates for the UN Internship Programme are required to cover the cost of travel including visa, accommodation, health insurance and other living expenses for the duration of the internship.  Will you be able to cover all the above-mentioned expenses?  Have you completed a UN Internship before? Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
