Background

Kijani Testing Limited (KTL) is a renewable energy and circular economy service provider supporting the adoption of productive-use-of-energy (PUE) technologies across East Africa. Through our accredited labs and Living Labs model, KTL provides product development support, independent verification testing, repair/refurbishment, and after-sale services for solar lighting, solar home systems (SHS), refrigeration equipment, solar water pumps (SWPs), and other PUE appliances.

To strengthen our research and technical capacity, KTL is offering a 3-month full-time internship (October – December 2025) for a motivated graduate or early-career professional with a background in research, data collection and analysis, or engineering.

Objective of the Assignment

To provide support in research, data management, and technical testing activities at KTL’s Kisumu office and field sites, while gaining hands-on experience in renewable energy systems, field testing, and product quality verification.

Scope of Work

The Intern will contribute to the following areas under supervision:

Research & Data Support

  • Support design and implementation of surveys and field studies.
  • Conduct data collection (lab and field), data entry, cleaning, and analysis.
  • Assist in compiling findings into reports and presentations.
  • Contribute to research on adoption, performance, and impact of PUE appliances.

Testing & Technical Support

  • Assist in laboratory and field testing of EPCs, solar water pumps, refrigeration systems, and solar lighting.
  • Support setup, calibration, and monitoring of testing equipment.
  • Apply basic knowledge of IoT systems and automated data logging where required.
  • Document testing results and provide inputs for technical reports.

Administrative & Capacity Building Support

  • Provide logistical support for field activities and training sessions.
  • Assist in preparing training materials, manuals, and documentation.
  • Participate in learning sessions to build technical and research skills.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Background in Research, Data Science, Statistics, Renewable Energy, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, or related fields.
  • Strong skills in data collection, cleaning, and analysis (Excel, SPSS, or similar tools).
  • Basic understanding of renewable energy technologies (solar, refrigeration, PUE).
  • Familiarity with IoT-enabled data collection systems is an added advantage.
  • Good report writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and willingness to learn.

Location & Workload

  • Position is based full-time at KTL Kisumu office, with possible field visits.
  • Full-time (5 days per week).
  • This role is open to Kenyan nationals only

Duration & Reporting

  • Duration: 3 months (October – December 2025).
  • The intern will report to the Head Technician and Project Coordinator.

Remuneration & Other Terms

  • This is a paid internship. KTL will provide a modest monthly stipend, to be communicated to the selected finalist.
  • Relocation costs will not be covered due to the short-term nature of the role.
