International Organization for Migration is the leading intergovernmental organization within the UN system, dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration since 1951.

The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience.

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;

b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or

c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.

d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.

e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

Background Information

Under the overall guidance of the Community Stabilization Unit Senior Programme Coordinator and the direct supervision of the Programme Officer (Environmental Peacebuilding), in coordination with the Community Stabilization Unit (CSU) team and relevant programme managers, the successful candidate will assist in supporting and contributing to the implementation of the Environmental Peacebuilding project; “Forging a Greener Peace in the Hirshabelle State of Somalia” (FGP), focusing on all aspects of project implementation.

in particular assisting with drafting activity proposals, undergoing procurement processes for activities, reporting, drafting case studies and communications materials from the project results and liaising with relevant units (finance, procurement, M&E etc.) for the project.

Responsibilities

Supervision

  • Under the overall guidance of the Community Stabilization Unit Senior Programme Coordinator and the direct supervision of the Programme Officer (Environmental Peacebuilding), in coordination with the Community Stabilization Unit (CSU) team and relevant programme managers.

Learning Objectives

  1. Assist in drafting activity proposals for activities under the FGP project.
  2. Assist the field teams to identify target locations and communities for project activities which fit the project goals.
  3. Assist in drafting interim narrative reports for the project donor.
  4. Assist with creating and monitoring Purchase Requisition forms for procurement for various project activities.
  5. Assist the communications team to extract learnings, case studies and best practices from the project to create communications products for a wide-ranging audience.
  6. Assist the field teams in successful implementation of the activities.
  7. Assist with liaising and coordinating with relevant units in IOM for implementation of activities; finance, procurement, compliance, M&E, etc.
  8. Assist with liaising and coordinating with the projects implementing partner; Berghof Foundation, and local partners in the field.
  9. Assist with monitoring instalments and other administration related tasks related to the implementing partner.
  10. Assist in liaising and coordinating with relevant Government actors through different working groups.
  11. Support such other duties that may be assigned.

Training Components and Learning Elements

  • The Intern will gain on-site experience in working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations system.
  • The Intern will gain a better understanding of IOM’s work, as an inter-governmental
  • organization in the field of migration and sustainable development, incl. cooperation with the government partners and UN agencies.
  • The Intern will acquire technical knowledge in reporting, development of diverse communications products and environmental and Community Stabilization -based programming.
  • The Intern can will be able to access relevant online training courses at the disposal of all IOM staff.
  • The Intern will have the possibility to interact with the multi-stakeholder constituents, as well as with the internal and external partners involved in organization and implementation of capacity building communications and knowledge sharing activities.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelors degree or/and Master’s degree in Political or Social Science, International Relations, International Development, Environmental Studies, Environmental Sustainability or a related field from an accredited academic institution.

Experience

  • Experience working on environmental projects is an advantage;
  • Experience in operational activities both in humanitarian and development sector is an advantage; and
  • Work experience in the region is an advantage

Skills

  • General knowledge of MS (ex. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.)
  • Cloud: InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop is an advantage

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

For this Position, fluency in English is required (oral and written); Working knowledge of Somali is an advantage.
