We are seeking a motivated and detailโoriented Legal Internย to support our Policy and Research work This role offers a unique opportunityย to gain handsโon experience in legislative processes, stakeholder engagement,ย and legal research within Kenyaโs private sector policy environment.
About KEPSA
The Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) is the apex body for the private sector in Kenya. KEPSA brings together local and foreign business associations, federations, chambers of commerce, professional bodies that are sectoral umbrella bodies and individual sectoral business membership organizations, corporates, from multinationals to large and medium- sized companies, SMEs, and start-ups from all sectors of the economy, across all parts of the country. This gives KEPSA a reach of over 2 million businesses directly and indirectly. KEPSA also serves as the national focal point of the East Africa Business Council (EABC), the umbrella body of businesses in East Africa. It hosts the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Kenya Chapter, a member of the ICC with a reach of over 45 million businesses globally.
Key Responsibilities
Theย Legal Intern will work under the guidance of the Policy and Research Managerย and support in:
- Parliamentaryย Engagement
- Coordinatingย participation in Parliamentary Departmental Committee meetings,ย ย ย ย leadership meetings, and Parliament
- Supportingย public participation on key private sector bills and amendment actsย ย ย (e.g., Finance Bill, Statute Law Miscellaneous Amendments).
- Preparing fortnightlyย reports to parliamentary leaders on bills being tracked and KEPSA inputs.
- Legislativeย Monitoring & Reporting
- Updatingย members on proceedings in both houses of Parliament, focusing onย ย ย legislative agendas impacting the private sector.
- Publishing weeklyย calendars of parliamentary activities.
- Reviewingย bills under consideration and preparing legislative bulletinsย highlighting stages, areas of interest, and potential impacts.
- Trackingย progress of bills, proposed amendments, and scheduled tabling dates.
- Policy Researchย & Advocacy Support
- Reviewingย bills and policies discussed by sector boards, drafting memoranda, andย ย ย incorporating feedback for submission to parliamentary committees or ministries.
- Attendingย parliamentary committee sittings, sector board meetings, and ministerialย ย ย ย forums to deepen understanding of legal and policy issues.
- Judiciaryย Engagement
- Supportingย coordination of Judiciary Round Table meetings.
- Assisting in training initiatives for courts on private sector perspectives in judicial processes.
- Governance and Legal Support
- Coordinate activities of the Governance and Leadership Board Committee.
- Provide general legal support, including review of Memoranda of Understanding with partners and related documentation.
Qualifications
- Currently pursuingย or recently completed aย Law degree (LLB).
- Strong interestย inย policy, legislation, and private sector advocacy.
- Excellentย research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Ability to workย independently and collaboratively in a fastโpaced environment.
- Strongย communication and organizational skills.
