The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development.

The Center, through its Research and Related Capacity Strengthening (RRCS) Division, seeks to strengthen individual and institutional research capacity to enable African researchers to fully participate in defining and implementing priority population and health programs on ย  the continent. As part of individual capacity strengthening efforts, APHRC has, over the years, been running a demand-driven research internship program whose objective seeks to nurture talented young Africans to become future scholars and research leaders.

For the 2026 period, the Research and Related Capacity Strengthening (RRCS) Division has opened internship opportunities in the following projects for 3-6 months, starting May 2026.

Project 5 โ€“ Data Science Program – Platform Testing and Quality Assurance (4 Interns)

Project Description

The Data Science Program leverages big data analytics, machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence (AI) to address critical population and public health challenges across Africa. The program strengthens data governance, promotes evidence-based decision-making, and builds local capacity through specialized training and collaborative research.

Internship Activities

โ—ย ย ย  Interns will support pre-production testing of the in-house AI/ML platforms (e.g., Faraja) to ensure quality, reliability, performance, and user experience meet required standards before public release.

Preferred Background & Skills (Both Positions)

โ—ย  ย Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.

Project 6 โ€“ Data Science Program – Software Developer (3 Interns)

Project Description

The Data Science Program leverages big data analytics, machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence (AI) to address critical population and public health challenges across Africa. The program strengthens data governance, promotes evidence-based decision-making, and builds local capacity through specialized training and collaborative research.

Internship Activities

โ—ย ย ย  Interns will support the development, enhancement, and optimization of existing platforms and AI systems.

Preferred Background & Skills (Both Positions)

โ—ย  ย Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.

Project 23 โ€“ Data Science Program (DSP) โ€“ (1 intern)

Project Description

The Data Science Program (DSP) at the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a specialized unit focused on leveraging big data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced statistical methodologies to improve population health and development outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa.

Internship Activities

  • Support the current Multimedia team in designing reports, brochures, policy briefs, banners, posters, and merchandise.
  • Support in videography and photography, capturing and editing.

Preferred background and skills

  • Degree or Diploma in relevant graphic or multimedia design / Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premier Pro, After Effects/ Lightroom) / Proficiency in Camera Handling (Photography/Videography)
  • Experience in preparing content for both print and digital platforms (reports, websites, social media campaigns) with Adobe creative suite and ability to capture and edit photos and videos.
