KEMRI is hiring a Medical Officer who will contribute to health research by supporting clinical projects, providing care to participants, and developing study protocols and training materials. The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a state corporation established through the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, which has since been amended to Science, Technology and Innovation Act 2013 as the national body responsible for carrying out health research in Kenya.

Role Title: Medical Officer

Key responsibilities

  • Implement pre-clinical and clinical research projects and/or supervise assigned components of the work.
  • Provide general diagnosis, care, treatment, and specialized clinical services to study participants.
  • Develop study-related tools, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and training materials; train study staff; conduct medical evaluations for participants meeting criteria for Adverse Events of Special Interest (AESI), and ensure timely reporting of such events.
  • Conduct medical assessments of children experiencing serious adverse events and ensure prompt reporting in accordance with study protocols.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of study design and objectives, and ensure compliance with study protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide expert clinical care and consultation for study participants in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Organize and lead Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions, and facilitate discussions with clinical and nursing teams.
  • Foster collaborative and professional working relationships with non-study staff within health facilities.
  • Work closely with the Principal Investigator to address monitoring and audit findings, and implement approved recommendations.

Vacancy Requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from a recognized institution.
  2. Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
  3. Prior experience in Clinical Research will be an added advantage.
