Shippers Council of Eastern Africa is hiring an Economist Intern to support research on transport economics, analyze data for reports, and assist in tracking trade facilitation. The Shippers Council of Eastern Africa (SCEA) is a leading Business Membership Association representing the interests of cargo owners across East Africa. Registered in Kenya, SCEA works through strategic partnerships with regional and international organizations to champion efficiency, competitiveness, and investment in logistics services and infrastructure. Our advocacy spans all modes of freight transportation and trade facilitation, with the goal of transforming East Africa into a region of high logistics efficiency and competitive pricing

SCEA is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and dynamic individual for the position of Economist Intern to support its research, policy, and trade facilitation initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct economic and trade research across all transport modes (sea, road, and air), logistics, shipping, and regional trade trends
  • Analyze data and support the preparation of reports, policy briefs, budget proposals, position papers, and presentations
  • Support in compilation of Logistics industry data for use in weekly, bi-monthly research reports and policy tracker;
  • Support advocacy work through data-driven insights and analysis
  • Assist in stakeholder engagements, forums, and industry consultations
  • Contribute to data collection, surveys, and sector studies
  • Support the development of SCEA publications and knowledge products
  • Monitor and report on emerging logistics and infrastructure related development
  • Monitor and report on performances of key Trade Facilitation Agencies (Kenya Railways Corporation, Kenya Bureau of Standards, Kenya Ports Authority etc)
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by supervisor or CEO

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, research and statistics related discipline.
  • Strong analytical and research skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; knowledge of statistical tools (e.g., SPSS, Stata) will be an added advantage
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated interest in trade, logistics, or maritime economics

Duration
