Green Focus Intern at Woodland Star International School

Woodland Star International School are recruiting a Green Focus Intern for an 3-6 Months unpaid, voluntary internship placement at Brackenhurst, Limuru, Kenya for the 2026/2027 school year.

Role Summary

The Green Focus Intern would support the planning and delivery of outdoor, inquiry-based environmental education lessons across different age groups. The intern would assist with learner supervision, child safety in the forest, gardening activities, animal care, lesson preparation, and practical sustainability projects.

This role would suit someone with an interest in education, conservation, gardening, ecology, sustainability, or outdoor learning. The intern does not need to be a qualified teacher, but should be responsible, practical, observant, and willing to learn.

Key Responsibilities

• Support Green Focus lessons in the forest, shamba, outdoor classroom, wetland areas, and other outdoor learning spaces.
• Assist with learner supervision and safety during outdoor and practical activities.
• Support behaviour management, transitions, group work, and hands-on learning tasks.
• Assist learners with planting, composting, watering, harvesting, habitat building, species observation, and environmental investigations.
• Support the care and maintenance of Green Focus spaces, including the shamba, forest learning areas, duck area, tortoise enclosure, compost systems, and outdoor classroom.
• Assist with simple lesson planning, resource creation, displays, posters, research notes, and project preparation.
• Support school events, sustainability initiatives, and community-based Green Focus projects.
• Uphold Woodland Star's mission, values, safeguarding expectations, and Behavior Code.

Key Competencies

• Strong awareness of child safety, especially in outdoor and forest-based learning environments.
• Interest in environmental education, conservation, sustainability, gardening, or outdoor learning.
• Basic plant and animal knowledge, or a willingness to develop this knowledge.
• Practical gardening skills, or a willingness to learn about planting, composting, soil care, and garden maintenance.
• Ability to support behaviour management in a kind and consistent way.
• Organised and proactive with lesson preparation, resources, and clean-up.
• Collaborative, reflective, creative and open to feedback.
• Basic building, maintenance, or practical DIY knowledge would be an advantage.
• Creative thinking and ideation skills to help develop engaging outdoor learning experiences, projects, and resources.
• Ability to support the execution of practical projects from planning through to completion.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

• Interest or experience in education, environmental education, conservation, ecology, agriculture, gardening, outdoor learning, sustainability, or a related field.
• Experience working with children is preferred.
• Practical gardening or outdoor project experience is preferred.
• Basic knowledge of local plants, animals, or ecosystems would be an advantage.
• Strong alignment with the school’s mission and values.
• Good communication skills and a collaborative attitude.

• Certified copies of academic and/or professional documents, where applicable.
• At least two professional references
