The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The overall objective of the Industry and Economy Division of UNEP is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies, practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.

The Sustainable Mobility Unit (SMU) is part of the Industry and Economy Division and promotes sustainable, low- and zero-emission transport solutions globally. UNEPโ€™s SMU seeks to engage a Communications and Social Media Intern for a period of six (6) months to support the communication, visibility, and social media outreach of the Unitโ€™s work, including global programmes, country projects, campaigns, knowledge products, and events. The intern will assist in developing digital content, managing social media channels, drafting communications materials, supporting the preparation of the Unitโ€™s newsletter, and strengthening the Unitโ€™s online presence and stakeholder engagement.

    Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Programme Manager, the Intern will undertake the following tasks in support of the Sustainable Mobility Unit (SMU):

    1. Provide support on social media dissemination for SMU work, including drafting posts, preparing visuals, scheduling content, monitoring engagement, and tracking basic analytics.
    2. Manage and support three communication campaigns under the GEF Global Electric Mobility Project, the Unitโ€™s Gender and E-Mobility workstream and the PAAPAM (Pan African Action Plan for Active Mobility) including content planning and coordination.
    3. Support the development and implementation of the UNEPโ€“FIA Foundation Communications and Advocacy Strategy including communications planning, development of fact sheets and case studies, and coordination of aligned messaging and outreach activities across platforms.
    4. Support the preparation and drafting of the Unitโ€™s newsletter.
    5. Support the collection, organisation, and basic visualization of vehicle electrification and sustainable mobility data for use in reports, presentations, and communication materials.
    6. Contribute to maintaining and updating online knowledge platforms and internal tracking documents.
    7. Support the development of short video content (e.g. reels, interview clips, event highlights), including basic editing and caption drafting.
    8. Assist in preparing monthly communications and visibility reports summarizing social media performance, outreach activities, and key engagement metrics.
    9. Support the layout, formatting, and visual presentation of reports and knowledge products.
    10. Coordinate with UNEP communications colleagues to ensure alignment with corporate branding, clearance processes, and publication guidelines.
