About Company

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the Director-General of UNON is the representative of the Secretary-General in Kenya. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP),the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Resident Coordination System (RCS) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, security, conference and information services (www.unon.org).
This internship is based in the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Division of Administrative Services (DAS), Information and Communication Technology Service (ICTS),Infrustructure Management (IMS).
The internship assignment will have multiple positions available for a period of 4-months.
The internship assignment is full-time and in-person at the duty station.
The internship assignment will not attract any remuneration or allowances.

Responsibilities
- Contributing to the day-to-day operation of the UNON IMS Server, Backup, and Infrastructure NOC.
- Monitoring and reporting on network, servers, storage, virtualization, and connectivity within the NOC environment.
- Monitoring NOC dashboards and alerts for potential incidents affecting ICT infrastructure services.
- Performing initial triage of incidents and escalating to relevant teams when required.
- Supporting troubleshooting for connectivity, performance, and availability issues.
- Assisting in the configuration and installation of network devices (routers, switches, firewalls).
- Supporting the setup and maintenance of LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi, and structured cabling.
- Assisting in basic wireless and wired network troubleshooting.
- Using network monitoring tools to track performance, bandwidth, and potential problems.
- Contributing to server maintenance, cloud resource management, and IT infrastructure optimization.
- Supporting user account management and network maintenance tasks.
- Collecting, analyzing, and visualizing infrastructure data to generate actionable insights.
- Contributing to AI and machine learning research, including the research, deployment, and optimization of Microsoft Copilot for IT automation and AI-driven workflows.
- Participating in infrastructure projects such as dashboard optimization, automation scripts, virtual machine migration, and configuring new machines.
- Contributing to knowledge capture and documentation by drafting SOPs, playbooks, troubleshooting guides, and training notes.
- Documenting processes, configurations, incidents, and presenting weekly NOC progress reports.
- Communicating with supervisors for any issues identified during monitoring or troubleshooting.
- Collaborating with peers and engineers to enhance the monitoring ecosystem and share best practices.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate school programme in information and communication technology or related area;
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of degree programme in information and communication technology or related area; or
(c) if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least three years of fulltime studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of an information and communication technology degree or related degree.
Preferred area of study: Candidates should be in the final year of a university degree (minimum bachelor’s) or have completed a degree in:
- Computer Science
- Information Technology
- Business Technology Management
- Data Science
- Electrical & Computer Engineering
- Any related field with a focus on data analytics, IT infrastructure, or business technology.
Desired Profile
- Good understanding of the OSI Model and TCP/IP protocols including Cisco Certified Network Associate curriculum
- Good understanding of virtual infrastructure (e.g., VMware, Proxmox, Hyper-V, Backup).
- Good understanding of server platforms (Windows/Linux).
- Fair understanding of physical network connectivity and structured cabling.
- Basic troubleshooting skills with willingness to learn advanced NOC troubleshooting.
- Passion for technology and enthusiasm for real-time monitoring and problem-solving.
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.
Infrustructure NOC operations and server/network monitoring is desirable. Please describe how your coursework or academic projects prepared you for Infrastructure NOC operations, and server/network monitoring.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
