UNEP is hiring a Communications Intern in Nairobi, Kenya to support its Climate Finance Unit. You will help develop and implement communication strategies, draft and edit content for various platforms, and assist with visual materials design. This role also involves documenting events and maintaining online presence. Ideal candidates are pursuing or have completed higher education and possess strong English communication skills. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systemโs designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP works to encourage decision makers in government, local communities and industry to adopt policies that promote efficient use of natural resources, climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, and sustainable patterns of consumption and production. UNEPโs Climate Change Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. This internship offer is within UNEP / Climate Change Division / Adaptation & Resilience Branch / Climate Finance Unit, Nairobi (Kenya).
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the ย supervision of the ย programme Manager, the intern will conduct the following task:
- Support the CFU Communications Lead in developing and implementing the Unitโs communications strategy across digital and traditional channels.
- Support in Drafting, editing and proofreading communications materials including newsletters, blog posts, social media content, press releases and website updates.
- Assist in the design and production of visual communications materials such as infographics, fact sheets, brochures and presentation templates.
- Support the documentation of CFU events, workshops and milestones through photography, note-taking and post-event write-ups.
- Help maintain and update the Unitโs online presence, including website content and social media accounts.
- Support in Monitoring media coverage and compile media roundups related to the Unitโs work on climate finance, nature-based solutions and sustainable land use.
- Participate in CFUโs internal meetings and assist the team in preparing report documents and communication resources.
- Support in any other duties on a needs basis.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelorโs degree or equivalent). We encourage applicants with a degree/background in the following fields: International Relations, Geography, Environmental Science, Energy Policy, Communications, Business Administration, or a related discipline focusing on climate change, sustainable development, and/or international environmental governance.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. ย NOTE: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas
