ABOUT YOUTH CHANGERS KENYA

Youth Changers Kenya (YCK) is a registered community-driven organization that promotes sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and addresses systemic issues of sexual violence among girls and young women from rural and peri-urban areas.

We are looking for a volunteer researcher and statistician to support the design, implementation, and analysis of research projects, with a focus on quantitative data. The role combines research support (literature review, data collection, and documentation) with statistical analysis to generate evidence that informs programs, reports, policy briefs, and grant applications.

This is a volunteer position for a period of 6 months, requiring approximately 10-20 hours per week, with flexible timing subject to project milestones and mutual agreement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Research Support

  • Assist in designing data collection tools (e.g., questionnaires, survey forms, and interview guides) for adolescent-focused or mental-health projects.
  • Support literature reviews and summarize empirical evidence relevant to the project's thematic focus.
  • Help coordinate data collection activities in schools or community settings, including liaising with field staff or partners where applicable.
  • Maintain accurate and organized research records, including codebooks, consent logs, and version-controlled datasets.

Data Management and Cleaning

  • Clean, organize, and structure raw data from surveys, forms, or digital platforms (e.g., Google Forms, ODK, or E-survey tools).
  • Perform data validation and quality checks (e.g., identifying outliers, missing patterns, and inconsistencies).
  • Maintain secure, anonymized datasets in line with data-protection guidelines and the organization's data-management policy.

Statistical Analysis

  • Conduct descriptive and inferential statistics using appropriate software (e.g., SPSS).
  • Run analyses relevant to the project (e.g., frequencies, cross-tabulations, t-tests, ANOVAs, regression models, and correlations).
  • Generate tables, charts, and short summaries for research reports, presentations, and grant applications.
  • Support the interpretation of findings in collaboration with the research team, ensuring linkages to program outcomes and policy implications.

Reporting and Dissemination

  • Contribute to drafting research sections of reports, concept notes, and progress updates.
  • Prepare clear, non-technical summaries of key findings for partners, donors, and stakeholders.
  • Assist in creating visual materials (e.g., graphs, infographics, or slide decks) to communicate results.
  • Support the team to write journals for publication.

Collaboration and Capacity Building

  • Work closely with project coordinators, field staff, and other volunteers to ensure alignment between research design and implementation.
  • Provide basic statistical support or guidance to other team members (e.g., explaining analysis plans or interpreting outputs).
  • Participate in team meetings, debriefs, and reflection sessions as required.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Currently pursuing or holding a degree in statistics, mathematics, psychology, public health, social sciences, or a related field with a strong quantitative focus.
  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative data analysis (e.g., coursework, thesis, or previous research projects).
  • Proficiency in at least one statistical software package (e.g., SPSS).
  • Strong understanding of basic statistical concepts (e.g., sampling, hypothesis testing, reliability, and regression).
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills, especially when handling large datasets.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English (and local language if applicable).

Desirable

  • Experience with adolescent mental health, school-based research, or community health projects.
  • Familiarity with survey tools (e.g., KoboToolbox and Google Forms) and data-entry platforms.
  • Basic skills in data visualization (e.g. SPSS graphs or Excel charts).
  • Knowledge of research ethics and anonymization of sensitive data.
  • Experience working remotely or in cross-cultural research teams.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • A meaningful opportunity to contribute to evidence-based programs addressing adolescent mental health or similar social issues.
  • Hands-on experience in research design, data analysis, and reporting that can strengthen your CV or portfolio.
  • A certificate of participation upon satisfactory completion of the volunteer period.
